Tour overview

3 Days. The Sahara.
Everything in Between.

The 3-day Morocco desert tour is the most popular private experience we build. Over three extraordinary days you cross the High Atlas Mountains, stop at a 1,000-year-old UNESCO kasbah, walk through a 300-foot limestone canyon, and arrive at the Sahara as the dunes turn amber in the late afternoon sun.

Night one is in the Dades Valley — dinner on a terrace above the gorge. Night two is in a private desert camp at Erg Chebbi — camel trek at golden hour, Berber dinner by the fire, the Milky Way above with zero light pollution. Dawn on Day 3 means climbing the tallest dune barefoot to watch the sun rise over Algeria.

Every departure is 100% private. Your group only — private vehicle, private guide, private camp. No shared tours, no strangers, no fixed schedule.

~185 miles · ~5 hours with stops

Across the Atlas Mountains

Your private driver collects you from your Marrakech riad before the city wakes up — typically 7am. You want to clear the medina while the streets are still cool and empty. By the time the sun clears the rooftops you are already south, moving through the outskirts and into open country.

Tizi n'Tichka Pass — 7,415 ft
The High Atlas in all its drama. The road switchbacks through Berber villages built from the same red clay as the mountain. Pull over at the summit — the view back toward Marrakech and forward toward the desert is one of the great road trip moments on earth.
Ait Ben Haddou — UNESCO World Heritage Site
A 1,000-year-old fortified village rising from a dry riverbed. Filming location for Gladiator, Game of Thrones and Lawrence of Arabia. Cross the river on stepping stones. Give yourself 90 minutes — not 30. The families who still live inside will offer you mint tea. Say yes.
Draa Valley & Rose Valley
The road follows the Draa south through a corridor of date palms so dense they feel impossible given the desert on either side. In April and May, the Rose Valley blooms pink with Damascus roses used to make Morocco's famous rose water.
Overnight — Dades Valley
Your riad clings to the canyon wall above the Dades Gorge. Dinner is a slow tagine on a terrace with the gorge dropping away below. You sleep better than you have in months.
02
Day Two
Todra Gorge to
the Sahara
~125 miles · ~3.5 hours with stops

The Road to Erg Chebbi

Day 2 is the payoff. You reach the desert by late afternoon — timed perfectly for the camel trek at golden hour. The landscape between Dades and Merzouga is the most dramatic single drive in Morocco.

Todra Gorge — Dawn
300-foot limestone walls closing to 30 feet across. A cold river runs through the bottom. Walk in, stop for mint tea at the café at the entrance. Buy bread from the women selling it outside and eat it in the canyon. One of the great simple moments in Morocco.
The Hammada — Desert Begins
After Todra the green disappears entirely. The road straightens across flat dark volcanic rock stretching to the horizon. The sky gets bigger. The silence starts to feel intentional.
First View of Erg Chebbi
You come around a low ridge and the dunes appear — 500 feet of bone-orange sand rising from flat desert floor. The car stops. Nobody says anything. After 350 miles, the Sahara doesn't ease you in. It just arrives.
Camel Trek at Golden Hour
Your guide wraps a blue turban around your head and the camels move slowly into the dunes. At the highest ridge you watch the sun compress against the horizon and the whole desert turns amber. This is the moment that ends up in every conversation for the next three years.
Overnight — Private Desert Camp
Your group only. Real bed with linen sheets, private ensuite bathroom, hot shower. Dinner is tagine by the fire with Gnawa drumming after. The Milky Way above Erg Chebbi — zero light pollution for 50 miles — is one of the most extraordinary skies you will ever see.
03
Day Three
Sahara Sunrise
to Marrakech
~280 miles · ~7 hours

The Morning You Will Never Forget

Your guide wakes you at 5am with tea. You climb the tallest dune barefoot — legs burning, sand cold between your toes. At the summit you sit and wait. The sky lightens from black to purple to a thin gold line along the eastern ridge. Then the sun clears the horizon and the whole desert ignites. You have earned it.

Sahara Sunrise — 5:30am
The single best alarm you will ever set. The Sahara at sunrise is a different place from sunset — cooler, quieter, the dunes striped with long shadows. Worth every early morning.
Breakfast at Camp
Bread, honey, argan oil and mint tea in the desert. The best breakfast you will eat in Morocco.
Return to Marrakech
The return route swings through Rissani market and the Ziz Valley — a narrow gorge filled with thousands of date palms. Back in Marrakech by 7-8pm. You will feel like you have been gone for a week, in the best possible way.

Questions answered

3-Day Morocco Desert Tour
— Your Questions.

The Sahara is roughly 350 miles southeast of Marrakech — about a 9 to 10-hour drive through the Atlas Mountains, kasbahs and desert plains. You do not do it in one shot. The 3-day tour splits it across 2 days of driving, with overnight stops in the Dades Valley and the desert camp. Day 1 is approximately 5 hours with stops. Day 2 is approximately 3.5 hours to reach Merzouga.
October through April is the best time for a Morocco desert tour. October has the best photography light — golden hour dunes turn amber and crimson. November through February has the clearest skies for stargazing with zero light pollution. March and April have the most comfortable temperatures for camel trekking and dune climbing, with the bonus of rose season in the Dades Valley. Avoid June through September — the Sahara exceeds 45°C and the experience suffers significantly.
Yes — without question for couples, families and milestone trips. The cost difference between a private tour and a group tour is smaller than most people expect, especially split across two, three or four people. What you get in return: your own vehicle and guide, no strangers in your photos, the ability to stop when the light is right, and a private desert camp where the only voices after dinner are your own group. If this trip matters to you — do it privately.
Pack layers — the desert swings from warm days to cold nights even in spring and autumn. Closed-toe shoes for dune climbing and gorge walking. A scarf or buff for the camel ride and wind. SPF 50+ sunscreen. A power bank — camps have limited electricity. Cash in Moroccan dirhams — no ATMs in the desert. Leave your hard-sided luggage at your Marrakech hotel and bring a soft duffel that fits in the 4x4.
US, UK, Canadian and EU citizens do not need a visa for Morocco for stays under 90 days. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your travel dates. No vaccinations are required. Morocco holds a Level 1 travel advisory from the US State Department — the safest rating available.
Absolutely. The 3-day tour is our most popular starting point — but every itinerary we build is custom. Want to add a night in Fes or Chefchaouen? Done. Want to start from a city other than Marrakech? No problem. Want to swap Erg Chebbi for the more remote Erg Chigaga? We do that too. Tell us what you want and we build the itinerary around you — free proposal within 24 hours.

3-Day Morocco Desert Tour from Marrakech

A 3-day Morocco desert tour is the single most popular private experience we build for international travelers. The route from Marrakech to the Sahara and back covers more extraordinary landscape per day than almost any other drive on earth — the High Atlas, the Draa Valley, Todra Gorge and Erg Chebbi, all in 72 hours. For travelers with limited time who want the full Morocco experience, three days is the sweet spot.

Every 3-day desert tour we build is private — your group, your vehicle, your guide, your camp. We work with private desert tour operators across the route who we have vetted personally. The camps we use at Erg Chebbi are positioned beyond the ridge, away from the shared camp clusters, where your group has the dunes entirely to themselves. For the best time to visit Morocco for a desert tour, October through April delivers the most extraordinary conditions. If you are planning a Morocco honeymoon or an anniversary trip, the 3-day desert tour is the centrepiece most couples choose. Morocco is safe for international travelers — the Marrakech-to-Merzouga route is one of the most-traveled tourist corridors in the country.
